Kenya Horse Diary

Joya is a 10-year-old chestnut mare, ex-polo, a cute little horse with some chrome and a major attitude. Susan is a 52-year-old expat in Kenya who spent her childhood collecting Breyer horse figurines. From the summer of 2009, we have one more year together. Our goals: ride a clear round at 1 meter, score over 60% in a Preliminary dressage test (I am voting this my "least likely to succeed" goal) and complete a Novice event in good standing, without taking a ride in an ambulance.

Montana: horse heaven (at least in July)

I saw a sign posted at a horse barn in Montana a couple of weeks ago: The Best Color for a Horse is Fat.

Apparently, the horses have taken this to heart. After a cool and rainy spring, the job of a horse in and around Bozeman these days seems to be to stand chest-high in gorgeous lush grass and just keep chewing. Right now, the grass is winning. The horses may disappear entirely in August, only the tips of their ears visible above the stalks.
